Benefits of Lemongrass Essential Oil

Lemongrass is a tall, perennial plant native to India and other surrounding countries. Lemongrass naturally propagates it self, meaning it will continue to grow and produce new plants on its own.

Purity and Sourcing

DoTERRA’s Lemongrass has a specific chemical makeup due to the sourcing location, the way it is harvested and processed. doTERRA chose to source their Lemongrass from Southern India because of the high levels of rain fall in the area. A greater amount of rain fall creates a higher citral content in the lemongrass, which makes it superior for essential oil use.

After doTERRA Lemongrass is harvested it goes through the process of steam distillation. Then the oil goes through stages of refining, filtration, blending and testing before export. DoTERRA always ensures that their oils are of the highest quality to be acceptable to distribute.

Benefits of Lemongrass Essential Oil

  • maintain healthy gastrointestinal function when ingested
  • natural insect repellent
  • cleansing properties
  • purifying and toning the skin
  • lessens feelings of stress and to help promote a positive outlook
  • heightens your awareness
  • soothes sore muscles and joints (I include Lemongrass in my discomfort blend)

Soothes Sore Muscles

Lemongrass helps soothe sore muscles when applied topically. You can mix Lemongrass with a carrier oil for a soothing massage.

Digestion

Lemongrass helps support healthy digestion when taken internally. The chemical makeup of Lemongrass includes aldehydes, which are known for their ability to maintain healthy gastrointestinal function when ingested. You can take Lemongrass essential oil internally by putting a few drops in a veggie cap, adding a drop to hot tea or water.

Outdoor Threats

Lemongrass is a natural repellant because of the high levels of citral and geraniol. Lemongrass naturally repels mosquitoes and ants.

Hair

Lemongrass has anti fungal properties, making it a key ingredient in my natural dry scalp spray. If you are dealing with a dry or itchy scalp, add 10-15 drops of Lemongrass to your shampoo. When you wash your hair scrub your scalp and let Lemongrass do it’s job.

Skin

Lemongrass contains purifying and toning benefits for the skin. Add a few drops of Lemongrass essential oil to your daily cleanser or moisturizer to help tone and purify skin. DoTERRA conducted a study on their Lemongrass essential oil that produced significant results suggesting that it helps support healthy skin, tissue repair and overall cellular well-being.

Cooking

Lemongrass is probably most famous for being used in Asain cuisine. It has been used as an ingredient in many soups, teas, curries and seafoods. One of my favorite ways to use Lemongrass is cooking Thai food. It is a key ingredient to yellow and green curry paste.
